Unalloyed tempered steels are in the carbon range between 0.22 and 0.50. They are intended for a tempering treatment consisting of hardening and tempering. During hardening, the maximum hardness relevant to the carbon content is achieved (up to approx. 65 HRC). In the subsequent tempering treatment, the hardness is reduced again to such an extent that an optimum combination of hardness and toughness is achieved. Hot-rolled heat-treatable steels are standardised in DIN EN ISO 683, Parts 1 and 2 (formerly DIN EN 10083, Parts 1 to 3). Steel grades in this standard are unalloyed C-steels, C25E to C45E and alloyed grades with alloying elements such as manganese, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, vanadium and boron added individually or in combination.
Classic uses of quenched and tempered steels are clutch parts, chains, crankshafts, axles, shafts and connecting rods.

These steel grades are slit by thyssenkrupp Materials Processing Europe from hot-rolled wide strip to the desired width and supplied pickled or unpickled.
